If you already know what affiliate marketing is, then you can dive into our guide on building an affiliate site with WordPress by clicking here. If not, continue reading as we give you a briefing on what affiliate marketing is.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

If you have never heard of affiliate marketing, here is the definition, per Pat Flynn:

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting another company’s product (or service). You find a product, promote it to others, and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

And also here’s a video from SEO Sorcerer defining affiliate marketing:

Disclaimer: Some of the links on this page are affiliate links. We only post affiliate links to products we personally use and stand behind. We recommend you take the same stance for the products you promote.

You Need a Website

Many people will sugarcoat it and tell you don’t need a website. While it is possible to make money online without a website, the techniques we use definitely require a website. Most affiliate networks require a website to even get into them. As stated, it’s possible to make money without a website, but we are looking to build a business, not just using churn and burn methods to make money. We are building a brand.

If this is something you haven’t done yet, then before moving forward you need to get this taken care of. Pat Flynn offers a free five-day course called Build Your Own Brand. It walks you through the process of setting up your website and getting the process of building your brand started. Oh, and did I mention it’s free?

How do I Join an Affiliate Network?

So now that we know what affiliate marketing is, how do we get started with the process? We need to be accepted into some affiliate networks or affiliate programs so we have some products we can promote and get some affiliate commission.

The most popular one is the Amazon Associates Affiliate Program. Over the years Amazon has continuously dropped its affiliate commission rates leaving many angry and looking for alternatives.

Really, your affiliate program or network you go with depends on your niche. For instance, if you want to sell digital products like eBooks then go with Clickbank. Despite their reduced commission structure, Amazon is possibly still a great option. Here’s a quick video on affiliate networks and programs:

If I was going to recommend one affiliate program to use for physical products (outside of Amazon) I would definitely go with Shareasale.

How to Make Money

Alright, now it’s time to make some money. How are we going to get eyeballs in front of your affiliate offers?

While I recommend you focusing on one method at a time, at least until you get the ball rolling, in time you want to add all of these money-generating tools to your toolbox.

SEO Traffic

A lot of people say, “I don’t wanna start a website, it’s too much work.” But if you’re serious about building an online business, you need a website or blog. We have gone over this once. Again, Pat Flynn does an excellent job of helping you get the ball rolling with Build Your Own Brand.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. So SEO traffic mostly means traffic from Google, but obviously there are other search engines. It takes time to get traffic from the search engines, so this is a long-term investment, but imagine how much it would pay off to rank #1 in the Google search results for something like “best iPad case.” The investment of your time is worth it when you choose the right keywords to target.

Social Media

Sure, you can’t use all of them, but everyone needs to use Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and most likely Pinterest. Beyond that, there are niche-specific ones as well as video-driven ones such as TikTok and Snapchat. Don’t overwhelm yourself, but you want to at least dip your toes in all of them.

Facebook

At this point, you’ve probably spent some time on Facebook over the years. Your business should at least have a Facebook Page for it. Facebook Groups are a great opportunity because of their much higher engagement. Learn more here about turning your stagnant Facebook Page into a booming Facebook group.

Love it or hate it, Facebook needs to be a part of your business.

Instagram

Many people write off Instagram as it’s “just photos” or “only kids use it” but those reasons are trumped by the number of people that use it and the amount of time they spend on there. If you pass on Instagram you are passing on an incredible opportunity to get your business and products in front of millions of eyeballs.

The amount of time you spend on your Instagram can fluctuate a great deal. Maybe you just want to do a post or two a week to showcase new products or ideas from your company. Maybe you want to spend hours a day on there and build your entire business around this powerful social media channel.

If you’re having trouble getting started with Instagram for your business, check out this article on how to get Instagram followers.

YouTube

Don’t be so quick to write off YouTube. There’s a lot of room on YouTube for people to create content on there that aren’t influencers. Odds are your website needs some video tutorials or would benefit from some type of video created by you.

While I am new to the YouTube game, I put out a video weekly and am in it for the long haul. Eventually, I will have thousands of subscribers.

Two of the people I learn the most from about YouTube are Brian G. Johnson and Cathrin Manning.

Pinterest

Don’t write off Pinterest. The least you can do is head over to their website and look around to see if anyone in your niche is having success. You might be surprised. Here’s a quick guide to finding out if your niche will work or help you select a niche that will thrive on Pinterest.

It might surprise you but I get plenty of traffic to my website from Pinterest. Maybe that’s where you came from to get here.
