Recent changes by the Amazon Affiliate Program has turned the affiliate world upside down and left many people looking around and looking for the best affiliate networks.
(Disclosure: Some of the links in this article are affiliate links, meaning if you use them I get a commission at no extra cost to you. It’s how I make money. If you are uncomfortable with this then search for the link on Google and you can bypass it.)
If you missed the news, Amazon changed their affiliate payment structure big-time. And not in a good way. Here are some of the cuts in a graphic provided by Search Engine Journal:
Those are some serious cuts.
A quick tangent: Jess Bezos has so much money and had a great opportunity to do something for some goodwill during this pandemic. Instead, he undercuts a large percentage of people who rely on his company’s affiliate program as their main source of income. You blew it, Jeff!
Now if you are okay with the rates or are new to the game and realize these rates are your starting point, that’s fine. But I advise you to go out there and find an affiliate program that is better for you. Odds are you may have thought about moving on from their already crappy rates. Well, now you have a little more motivation to do so. Let’s make it happen!
Then there are other people whose categories weren’t affected by the commission cuts by Amazon. After all, not all categories have been lowered. In that case, carry on as you were. Don’t completely write off Amazon just yet, even if your commissions were lowed. But be aware you could be next and start developing a contingency plan.
5 Alternatives to Amazon
1 – Best Buy, Walmart and Target
I know this is three different stores, but we are going to roll them all up into one since they are all big-box retailers.
The crappy thing about these three companies is their commissions can be even lower than Amazon. At Best Buy you are starting at 0.5%. Walmart offers 1%. Target offers the most upside as it varies by category and tier you are in with their affiliate program.
Here are links to apply for these three affiliate program:
While these three don’t offer the best commission rates, they do offer brand recognition and you can find just about any product in the world on one of these sites. You might as well apply and add them to your arsenal.
2 – ShareASale
Now we’re getting to the good stuff. ShareASale is an affiliate network with so many options. They have a program for the sports apparel company Fanatics. Reebok, Sun Basket and Allbirds just to name a few more. With commissions much, much more favorable than the big box retailers. For instance, Fanatics offers 15%! Reebok offers 7%. You can get some serious commission from ShareASale.
3 – eBay Partner Network
There are all kinds of stuff you can sell on eBay. Basically any tangible good in the world. So why not sign up for the EPN (eBay Partner Network)?
Publishers on the EPN earn 50-70% of what eBay makes on the sale of products, Which, if you have used eBay, you know they take a nice chunk of the profit from each sale.
The variety of products along with the generous payouts make EPN a great option for affiliate marketers.
4 – AliExpress
If you’ve never checked out AliExpress, that’s something you should definitely do right now. It’s a website where you can find some really good deals, but very often you get what you pay for. Their variety of products makes it a good option. Plus, we wanted to make sure to include an affiliate program that does not require a website. AliExpress does not require a website to join their affiliate program!
Check out their very favorable commission structure:
If you don’t have a website this is a great affiliate program to get started with. Even if you do have a website there is a wealth of products on
5 – Clickbank
Clickbank is an affiliate program that sells digital products. For many of you, this is not a great option, but for some, it may be. For instance, if you have a website about pets then there are some great digital products on training pets on Clickbank.
You can take a look around Clickbank and if you find the right product, you can build a website around that product.
For instance, there is a high selling product on Clickbank called Vert Shock. It’s a three-step program that offers “at least 9-15 inches +” to your vertical jump “in less than 8 weeks.” Heck, I might buy it right now. I wouldn’t mind being able to dunk.
Clickbank is definitely worth a look if you are interested in selling digital products.
Other Affiliate Programs
Those are our five Amazon Affiliate Program alternatives, but there are many, many more to look into. Check them out:
Another Alternative – Find Your Own Affiliate Program
Maybe you have a company or service in your niche that you really believe in. Do a quick search of their website and see if they have an affiliate program. If not, then you can always try to see if their product is on one of the sites above, such as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc.
Or you can go directly to the company and see if they will work with you personally as an affiliate. If you are able to sell a lot of a product, the company will probably do their best to try to work something out with you. It’s worth a try!
When you find a niche-specific affiliate program it’s very likely they will pay a higher commission. Also, they often work with their affiliate, giving email templates, promotional images and more things to help you have success.
While we listed our best affiliate networks above, every situation is different. You need to make sure you find the one that’s best for you. There could be an affiliate program out there waiting for you that could increase your income tenfold in a very short time. Now get out there and find it.
Also – Don’t Turn Your Back on Amazon Just Yet!
When Amazon cut the commission it was definitely upsetting and wanted you to find alternatives. And that’s why we’re here, to help you with that.
