What is Affiliate Marketing? The Best Way to Make Money Online

Sharing is caring!

At SEO Sorcerer, we discuss many ways to get traffic to your website. SEO, social media marketing, email marketing and more. Once you have an audience, you need to decide how to earn revenue. If you don’t have a physical product, digital product, or anything else to sell, affiliate marketing is the best way to earn revenue. What is affiliate marketing? In this article, we’ll discuss affiliate revenue is and how to earn it.

Here is the definition of affiliate marketing, per Pat Flynn:

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

That’s great, right? You get to make a profit without worrying about inventory, product creation and that whole process.

So now you’re ready to earn some affiliate commission. How do you generate traffic to get these people to the affiliate offers to purchase them? Let’s discuss this.

Five Ways to Drive Traffic to Affiliate Offers

SEO or Google Traffic

If you are in a hurry, this method is not for you. But since we have SEO in our website’s title, we are rolling with it.

In the SEO or Google traffic method, you will be creating content on a website and targeting certain keywords to rank for. For instance, you will try to be ranking for certain Google searches like “best podcast microphone” or “best affiliate marketing tutorial” or “Adobe Premiere Pro review.”

As far as your content goes, you can do a product review, you can do a list of the top products in a certain niche or you can literally create the need for something with your content. For instance, if you have made it this far in the article, I could create a need for you to find out how to get started with affiliate marketing. Then I would send you to a digital product that helps you get your start with affiliate marketing. (I may or may not do that later on in the article.)

It takes months to go from a brand new website to earning affiliate revenue with SEO. So if you don’t have patience, this is not the method for you.

Become an Influencer

Odds are you have probably heard of influencer marketing. While this isn’t exclusive to Instagram, it is something that definitely took off with this social media platform. Influencers also very commonly use YouTube to build their brand.

In this method, you simply establish yourself as an influencer in a certain industry. How do you do this? You provide yourself with credibility by making yourself useful to those who are seeking information in your niche.

There are a number of ways to provide value to someone seeking it, including, but not limited to:

  1. Making funny memes.
  2. Reviewing products in the niche.
  3. Giving tutorials on how to use the products in their niche.
  4. Setting up a website or social media channel that is of great aid to people in a specific niche.

Simple, enough, right? Well, it does take time. You can start an Instagram account where you deem yourself an expert on making YouTube videos. Until you build up an audience and establish some credibility and knowledge in the area of making YouTube videos, you aren’t going to make much affiliate commission, if any.

Pinterest

Pinterest for business is unique in that it doesn’t take long to get the ball rolling. If you are able to create visually appealing pins then you could be a matter of hours or even minutes away from your first affiliate commission.

So how do you make affiliate commission with Pinterest? You simply create aesthetically pleasing pins and use them to direct people to an affiliate offer or your website.

You might think that Pinterest is just for arts and crafts or recipes, but there’s so much more. For more information on how to get started with Pinterest marketing, click here.

YouTube

If you want to learn how to do something, how do you figure out how to do so? There’s a great chance YouTube is one of the first things that pop in your head.

YouTube is a great place to give someone a solution to a problem they have. You can even use it to give them a solution to a problem they didn’t even realize they have.

For instance, let’s say someone heads to YouTube to search for “how to get more followers on Instagram.” They find a video that offers tips and tricks on how to get more followers on Instagram, then at the end of the video, they see an offer where someone offers an Instagram management service. Boom! Look at that. If they want those followers badly enough, they could possibly get their wallet out and purchase the service.

Facebook

While many of the younger people in this world have moved on from Facebook, it’s still something much of the world still uses. So how do you make affiliate commission with Facebook? You build a Facebook Page or a Facebook Group in a certain niche and then present them with affiliate offers that they will find useful.

Facebook can be used as the primary avenue for your business or it can just be a spoke in the wheel. You can use it to run paid ads and target potential customers for your affiliate offers. Or you can use it to provide information on new content or products at your website. Either way, your business or service should have some type of presence on Facebook.

Which Path is Best For You?

Alright, now that you’ve seen five ways to attack affiliate marketing, which one should you go with?

You might want to brace yourselves for this answer. But here it comes:

All of them.

That’s right. You want to use all of these methods to start earning affiliate commission.

Before you start freaking out, let me say that you want to do one at a time. Start out with the one that you think will be the best for your business. For instance, if you are very comfortable in front of a camera and know how to create a video, then start with YouTube. Put all of your focus on it. Then once you are comfortable enough with your YouTube video creation, move on to what you would like to do next.

When you make are using affiliate marketing to make money, you need to exhaust all possible methods of earning. Find out which ones work best and of course, focus on those. But you don’t know what works and what doesn’t until you try it.

Obviously, if you have a website that is based on fantasy football tips, you can probably skip Pinterest. And don’t limit yourself to just the five methods I listed. There are many, many more. Other places to get traffic to your content include Reddit, online forums, email marketing and more. Make sure to find every possible option there is to get people to see your affiliate offers.
